I wanted to start by addressing all of the negative reviews on this item, give it a fair shot, ok? Unless you want to spend a lot more on a fancier blocks and gears kit, review this based on the fact that it is a fun, imaginative way for your kids to play for under $20! Just because someone got it free/at a discount doesn't mean they are making up their review. I thought I hated it until I sat down with a clear head and thought about the facts.
It is under $50.
It is for creative play.
It is for kids who like to be creative.
IT IS CHEAP.
It is not fair to compare it to gears and blocks sets that cost twice this or more.
It is not the gear set for toddlers.

When I first opened this item, I was upset that I ordered it. I thought it looked like cheap plastic junk. I did not even give it a second thought, until the weather turned bad and my kids were BORED. I asked them if they wanted to try this out, and of course they said yes. I told them it was supposed to be a spring/Easter gift but I didn't think they would like it. I WAS WRONG.
This is a great toy for growing minds. It exercises critical thinking and STEM skills, I love that it teaches spatial reasoning and beginning engineering concepts.

Some people are complaining about no directions... That means your kid has to USE THEIR IMAGINATION!!! They are forced to FIGURE IT OUT. They have to look at the box and connect the dots in their head, they can make one of a kind pieces. It really is not THAT HARD to figure out that you put a gear on the small piece, put the small piece onto the bigger piece and line it up so that they make the other move.

If you are giving this to a child who is used to netbooks and ipads, they may not like it. If your kid MUST HAVE DIRECTIONS to figure something out, they may even hate it (it does come with some project ideas). If you are giving it to a kid who plays with legos all day long and still has a spark of creativity in their head, they could love it! My kids laughed and smiled and had FUN playing with this. (and they are a bit spoiled with computers and tablets, but they also LOVE legos and creative play!).

I was made a believer that this is a great toy/gift for my kids when I presented it to them and they loved it right away. I feel I do not give my kids enough credit in the creativity department sometimes, and I am happy I let them have this vs just donating it. She is still playing with it an hour later! My only caution is that the pieces are small. I worry my 2 year old son will get ahold of one. The age range says 3+, that is simply because a 3 year old normally knows not to swallow things. This is not an appropriate gift for a 3 year old unless they are a genius. My kid seems to get the hang of it at almost 5

I received this item at a discount in exchange for my honest review, and I am happy I gave it a fair shot!
